Faire du pain avec le moulin de Yates

A Passion for BreadYep, that’s a mouthful — and so were the delicious baked goods we enjoyed at La Farm Bakery early this month as we helped master baker Lionel Vatinet celebrate the publication of his new cook book, “A Passion for Bread.”

Lionel has been a supporter of Yates Mill Associates for several years, since he first included our stone-ground cornmeal in one of his recipes at his bakery and restaurant in the Preston Corners shopping center in Cary. He visited again more recently to buy cornmeal, make a generous gift and take photographs for the cook book.

“A Passion for Bread” features several of those pictures and a recipe for delicious Frenchman’s Corn Bread, using Yates Mill cornmeal — which you can also buy year-round at Historic Yates Mill County Park and at our holiday sale on Saturday, Dec. 7.

YMA at La Farm Bakery

Jill, Margaret, William and Tom promote Yates Mill at the book signing

Lionel graciously invited volunteers from Yates Mill Associates to a party and book-signing at the bakery on Nov. 5. YMA board members Jill Adams and Tom Wentworth, YMA President Margaret Lillard, and head miller William Robbins and his wife, Jeanne, proudly represented us at the event — with Tom and Margaret in their circa 1860s costumes.

Many guests heard about the mill for the first time when the YMA group talked to them and handed out information about our work to maintain and operate Yates Mill. The La Farm Bakery staff also bought bags of our cornmeal to resell at the bakery as patrons try to recreate Lionel’s recipes.

Yates Mill is lucky to be in the middle of a growing community of food enthusiasts in Wake County and across North Carolina. We’ve enjoyed partnering with La Farm Bakery and Raleigh Brewing Co., and look forward to moving forward with ideas proposed by some other local food and drink establishments.

Meanwhile, if you love to cook for yourself, pick up a copy of “A Passion for Bread” at local bookstores or at La Farm Bakery (4248 Cary Parkway), grab a bag of delicious stone-ground Yates Mill cornmeal and get cookin’!
