Help keep Yates Mill in tip-top shape – with BARBECUE!

2013 Yates Mill Roof Repair

Barbecue built this roof!

If you made it out to our fundraising Chickin Pickin’ last spring, you remember how delicious — and abundant — the barbecue and fixins’ were. And if you’ve been to Yates Mill since the start of the year, you’ve seen what we built with the money we raised: a brand-new roof.

It’s time again to stuff yourselves for a good cause: the second annual Chickin Pickin’ is coming up! Mark your calendar for Saturday, April 27. We’ll dish up delicious barbecue from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., rain or shine.

Each $25 ticket gets you a plate full of chicken and pork barbecue, baked beans, sweet potatoes and cole slaw. You also get cornbread made from Yates Mill cornmeal, dessert and a drink. We can prepare plates to go, preferably with advance notice.

Read about last year’s Chickin Pickin’ and tell us that doesn’t make you hungry. As before, pitmaster Jim Kellenberger, Side Street Restaurant¬†owner Mary Lu Wooten and our volunteer cornbread bakers are providing the food to Yates Mill Associates for free. That means all the money raised from this event will go to mill repairs. We have a big project in store for this winter — replacement of the forebay (or flume), the box that channels water over the waterwheel — so we can really use your support.

Order a ticket now by sending an email to or by calling Historic Yates Mill County Park at 919-856-6675. If you know a YMA board member, they have tickets for sale as well. If we have tickets left, we’ll sell food on the day — but we have a limited amount, so it’s better to order yours now!

Take a tour of the mill; they run every half-hour from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Then head over to the amphitheater meadow to fill your belly, visit with your friends, and help us keep beautiful Yates Mill running. Join us at the Chickin Pickin’ on April 27!
