‘Mill as Muse’ celebrates beauty in nature, history

Best in show-artist in 2013 Mill as Muse contest

Sandy Winzenz won best in show for artwork this year.

Yates Mill may be the centerpiece, but Wake County’s Historic Yates Mill County Park is full of eye-pleasing treasures. If we ever need a reminder of that, we can turn to this year’s winners of the Mill as Muse contest.

The park staff organizes the Mill as Muse contest every winter, allowing local photographers and artists of all ages to show how they’re inspired by the park’s historic and natural landscapes.

The winning paintings and photos often feature a view of the historic gristmill. But this year, we noticed quite a few of the best works featured the kind of miniature magic that only comes from spending time gazing deep into the park’s beauty.

This year, 93 entries were submitted to the contest – 37 works of art and 56 photographs. The Mill as Muse contest takes entries every January, with winners anounced in early February. Keep an eye on our website and the park’s site for information about the eighth annual contest coming up in 2014!
